Fan Reviews of Tom Cruise Movies

Top Gun (1986)

“You’ve got to be careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there.”

Top Gun is a 1986 American drama film directed by Tony Scott. It stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards. Based on the 1986 novel of the same name by James Vance Marshall and William M. Gaines, the film follows the story of Maverick (Cruise) and Iceman (Kilmer), two fighter pilots at the United States Naval Air Station in Miramar, California. Maverick is a young and cocky hotshot who is being trained by a stern but respected senior officer, “Maverick’s” mentor, Captain “Wax” (McGillis). Iceman, an older pilot, is a quiet and methodical professional who is equally adept at flying planes, women, and cards.

The plot of the film deals with the pair’s competition for the affections of a local girl, with Maverick ultimately winning out. The action then shifts to an air-combat scenario involving the Soviets, and Maverick and Iceman’s efforts to protect the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. As with the original novel, Top Gun deals with a wide variety of aviation-related issues, such as the changing face of the US Navy, the difficulty of operating a fighter jet, and the nature of the bond between men in combat.

The film was a moderate box-office success, but was panned by critics as being overly violent and featuring unrealistic depictions of flying. It has nevertheless gained a following in subsequent years among aviation enthusiasts. A sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, was released in 2019, with Cruise returning in the role of Maverick.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

The mission begins with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as a top-notch spy being sent to the French Riviera to save a kidnapped scientist. Hunt is soon joined by his team and, with the help of a beautiful French operative named Jean (Vanessa Redgrave), they embark on a dangerous mission to track down and retrieve the scientist from an elaborate series of tunnels under the city.

Mission Impossible is a thrilling and intelligent action/adventure film with a refreshing sense of style and pace. The movie’s special effects are flawless, and its storyline is inventive, original, and exciting. It is also a very funny movie with many memorable moments that will make you laugh out loud, such as when Hunt is trying to sneak past security guards while carrying a huge pile of boxes, and the entire time he has to listen to an opera blaring in his ears! The film’s supporting cast is also excellent. In fact, Vanessa Redgrave gives an award-winning performance as Hunt’s sidekick, and I particularly enjoyed her scenes with the villain, Gabriel Luna (Jonathan Pryce), who is also excellent as a ruthless assassin.

The DVD includes deleted scenes and a great documentary about the making of the film.

Jerry Maguire (1996)

“I saw Jerry McGuire last night and it was awesome! I laughed so hard. The plot was great. It was funny and had me crying tears of laughter. I really loved the main characters and how Tom’s character was like a real person. I really enjoyed watching it and would give it a 10.”
