Black Mass

Black Mass is a great biopic of notorious Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger. The film tells the story of the rise and fall of Bulger and his infamous gang, The Irish Mob. As the movie progresses, it slowly reveals the character of Whitey Bulger. He is portrayed as a man who is deeply in love with his wife, and a loving father. When the viewer gets to know Whitey Bulger, they can’t help but empathize with him, especially when his young daughter is murdered by gangsters.

The character development in the film is what makes it so compelling. Throughout the film, we watch as Whitey tries to keep his family safe from gangsters. The viewer gets to see how he was able to take over the crime organization, and how he was able to keep it all under wraps for so long. — Charles Clemmons

Donnie Brasco

In the mid-80s, the New York office of the FBI was on the hunt for Joseph “Donnie Brasco” Pistone, an informer who was taking payoffs from two of the five families in New York’s Mafia. Donnie had infiltrated the mob, but as he was being targeted for execution, he decided to defect and work as an informant for the FBI. He became one of their top informants, and provided information about the activities of the Bonanno and Gambino crime families that led to several convictions. The story of his infiltration of the mob is told in the 1997 film Donnie Brasco. In the film, Pistone (played by Johnny Depp) is seen infiltrating the crew of an imprisoned capo, and then eventually becoming one of his lieutenants. Depp’s character, nicknamed “Lefty Guns”, is eventually captured by other mobsters and executed. — Martha McCully
